| Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family, The time has come that I must write my blog in German! I've thought about tackling this challenge for a couple months but I just haven't done it yet! Last week, my host mother told me, "You must write in German!" So I thought, "It's time to give it a go." Of course I will also write in English so everyone back home can understand! I may be fluent in German but I am still not perfect. I will make mistakes so please bear with me! |
Berlin. | Berlin. A beautiful city. Home to stunning new architecture as well as some breathtakingly old architecture. I was lucky enough to travel to Berlin this past Wednesday and stay through Sunday. The capital of Germany did not disappoint! On Wednesday, I met up with my friend, Lauren (laurengoesgerman.weebly.com), at the Berlin Central Station. We also ran into a few other friends (I found Cat on the train and apparently our friend, Ben, was also aboard. Maygen also found us in the train station.) and ate ice cream! After that, Lauren and I headed for her host family's apartment in the city. |
| That night, we ate with Lauren's lovely host family and quickly went to bed. I'm so thankful that I got to meet Lauren's host family and stay with them for my time in Berlin! On Thursday morning, we ate breakfast before heading out into the city. We rode the subway to the Youth hostel where the rest of our friends were staying and we all went on a tour of the city (complete with a fun tour guide)! |

| We had a lot of free time on Thursday after our tour! Michelle, Lauren, Kali and I went back to the Hackescher Market and I ate currywusrt for lunch. After that, we found a really neat little ice cream cafe and had dessert! I had lemon sorbet and strawberry sorbet and it was SO DELICIOUS! |
| We went to the Ritter Sport Chocolate World, bought chocolate, and then we ate dinner in a Sixties Diner. I had a bacon cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake (so good!). The next day started off just like the last. Lauren and I ate breakfast together at her apartment and we met up with Michelle and Kali. First, we went to Charlottenburg Palace. It was so beautiful! After that, we took the fast train to Potsdam (now "Last Train to Clarksville" is stuck in my head... "fast train to Potsdam"... get it?). We bought fresh strawberries at a market to eat on the train ride! |
| Oh I almost forgot! Before we got on the subway to get to Charlottenburg, we saw a lady on the street with special glasses to see the partial eclipse. She saw us looking and asked if we wanted to look through them as well. "Of Course!" we said. It was so beautiful and unique to see the eclipse. We definitely had luck that day! In Potsdam we rented bikes and rode all throughout Potsdam (or at least through as much as we could...)! It was so spectacular! Potsdam is home to 19 palaces! The whole time, we kept saying that we were a biker gang. It was so great and also fun because we all forgot how to bike! |
| It's also difficult to ride a bike as you're taking pictures (like us). Either way, we had so much fun before we headed back to Berlin and the Parliament. We met up with our group before Lauren, Mahalia, Mason, Kali, our new Irish friend, Jen and I looked for a cafe. Of course we looked and looked for a unique hole-in-the-wall but didn't find one so we ended up at Starbucks. Per usual. After delicious coffee and treats, we went shopping a bit (at some of my favorite Swedish stores!) and met up with our group again. We all at pizza together in the Ampleman Cafe. It was such a great time because we just got to talk with all of our old (and new) friends the entire night! I wanted to celebrate my birthday (that was three days later) with all of my friends while I could. The waiter brought me a slice of cheesecake and Kali started singing "Happy Birthday." Soon everyone joined in. It was such a nice gesture that they gave me cake, however I still don't like cheesecake. My friends were happy about that though because it meant that they all got to split my cake! |
| After eating and talking with each other (for three hours...), Lauren and I had to say goodbye to our friends. They were leaving early the next morning and we wouldn't see them again. Before we went back home, we found a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and ate apple strudel for my second birthday celebration of the night. The next day didn't have as nice of weather as the previous two days but we were lucky that it didn't rain before midday! Lauren and I visited the East Side Gallery (it's been on my bucket list for a while). The Wall was definitely one of the coolest things I saw in Berlin! Plus, we took lots of pictures! |
| Finally, we went shopping some and headed back to Lauren's apartment. Not before we celebrated my birthday yet again at Hard Rock Cafe! Lauren's host family invited us to join them for an Easter Egg-decorating dinner party that evening! It was SO MUCH FUN and was definitely the highlight of my weekend! |
| I'm so grateful that I got to travel to Berlin (and I'll be back there in two and a half months)! |
